Shawn Metzger was the former personal limo driver and killer of professional football player David Gitelson in "Mr. Monk Makes the Playoffs".
The Big Game, and A Big Offer...[]
Sometime before the 2009 playoffs between the San Francisco Condors and the Wildcats, the defensive coach of the latter team, Brian Binsack, approached Shawn. He offered him a substantial amount of money for him to make a copy of a defensive playbook for the Condors, which would allow the Wildcats to know their moves ahead of time and give the Wildcats the win.
Shawn chose to steal the book of his client, backup quarterback David Gitelson. He made his play when David went into a party with his girlfriend the night before the game. Once the two were out of the limo, Shawn took the playbook to a printing place to make a copy. In his haste, he dropped the book, causing several pages to spill out. Due to only having an hour to get the book to Binsack before David got out of the party and noticed he was gone, Shawn hastily put the pages back in and made the copy, unaware that thanks to the fall, many of the pages were either upside down, in the wrong order, or both. Binsack didn't seem to mind, as he gave Shawn his money and the two went on their merry way.
The Plan Goes Out of Order[]
Things started to go very wrong for Shawn on game day. David took a lookover of his playbook, noticing the messed up pages. He figured someone had tampered with it and the only likely suspect was Shawn. Gitelson stormed out of the locker room ranting "They're [the pages] out of order!", walking past hedge fund manager and Condors fan Chet Walsh, whose request for an autograph he blew off to confront Shawn. When David confronted Shawn, he ended up shoving him into his limo. Fearing for his health and life, Shawn grabbed the tire iron out of his car and struck the quarterback over the head with it, killing him almost instantly.
As the game was close to starting and the fans were pouring in to tailgate, Shawn couldn't risk leaving with Gitelson's body. So he chose to instead disguise him as a passed out fan, putting Condors makeup and a Condors wig on him to cover up the bloody head wound. However, he neglected to remove Gitelson's championship ring, which later led to the body being discovered.
A Witness to Grill[]
With the body hidden for now, Shawn had another problem; Chet Walsh. Shawn had seen Gitelson's interaction with Walsh and grew nervous. He wasn't sure if he had seen the pages of the playbook and could connect Gitelson's death to him, but Metzger couldn't take the risk that he had. He figured Chet was going to have to die too.
Shawn chose to siphon gasoline out of his limo, put it in a drinks bottle, and pour the gasoline into Chet's barbecue grill. He figured when Chet lit it, the gasoline blast would kill him and it would be figured Chet simply put too much lighter fluid on his grill.
However, the blast only gave Walsh burns on his hand, which he "treated" by putting a foam finger over it. Shawn still stayed behind, perhaps planning another way to get rid of Walsh or just keeping up appearances as Gitelson's driver. He did not know Walsh had talked about seeing Gitelson earlier in the day when fans were complaining about the Wildcat's poor start, among said crowd being Adrian Monk and Leland Stottemeyer.
Figuring his best chance now was to run, Shawn was later arrested for David's murder and the theft of the playbook in Marin County.
