Late at night, a car speeds down the road. The driver's cell phone rings-- frantically, she answers it.

Kate: Harry, thank God you called.

Harry: Kate? Where are you now?

Kate: Oh, I'm--I'm on my way. I'll be there in 20 minutes. How is she?

Harry: I don't know. The veterinarian won't let me see her.

He's pretending to be waiting on their sick dog--but instead, he drags a ramp out to the middle of the slick road, not far away from where Kate is speeding to meet him.

Kate: Well, what did they say?

Harry: She was hit by a car, that's all they know. (Kate sobs.) They think her back legs are broken.

Kate: My poor baby!

From the back of Harry's car, the dog whines--it's perfectly fine.

Kate: I don't--I don't know how it happened. How'd she get out of the yard.

Harry: Oh, I don't know. Maria must've left the gate open.

Kate: No, I don't think so. I checked it myself.

Harry: Where are you now?

Kate: Oh, I'm, uh, I'm going past the ranger's station. Oh, God, if something's happened to her, I will never forgive myself.

Harry: Just hurry!

Kate: I'm going as fast as I can.

She sees the ramp, and screams. Harry watches her car go off the road.

People gather at a room in the police station, waiting to hear a statement from the former commissioner. Sharona and Monk enter the room, but are immediately stopped by an officer guarding the door.

Officer: Whoa. Press pass?

Sharona: No.

Officer: Are you on the list?

Sharona: No.

Officer: I'm sorry, I can't let you in.

Sharona: Officer, this is Adrian Monk.

She gestures to Monk, who is standing in the corner and straightening the tassels on a nearby American flag. The officer follows her gaze.

Officer: Sorry, sir, I--I didn't know.

Sharona: Uh, could we stand over there? We don't like to be touched. (off of the officer's nod) Adrian. Adrian, come on.

She leads Monk to the back corner of the room as a man reaches the podium in the front.

Man: As you can imagine, the past three days have been very painful for the entire department. Our prayers are with the Ashcomb family. The former commissioner is here, and has asked to say a few words. Commissioner?

Harry Ashcomb steps up.

Harry: It's been 72 hours since my wife Katherine disappeared. I want to thank everyone for their prayers and good wishes. It's meant the world to me. There's someone out there who knows what happened to my wife. I'm asking you to look into your heart, and to come forward with any information you might have. To Kate... if you can hear this... hang in there, baby. I love you. Don't give up.

Monk is becoming emotional.

Harry walks away, ignoring the clamoring reporters that follow him.

Stottlemeyer: Monk, what are you doing here?

Monk: I wanna help.

Stottlemeyer: You wanna help? Say a prayer for the man.

Monk: I can do more than that, captain. You know I can.

Stottlemeyer: Can you imagine what that man's going through?

Pause.

Monk: Yes. I can.

Sharona gives the captain a look.

Stottlemeyer: Come on, follow me.
