Monk Wiki

Marty Eels is a character in Mr. Monk and the Other Detective. He is a failed private eye who specializes mostly in divorces and insurance scams. He appears at the scene of Harold Gumbal's murder, appearing to know way too much about what happened. As Adrian Monk soon realizes, Marty only knew all the details because his mother worked for an airline and overheard Gumbal's killers discussing what happened over the phone. His mom informs him about the details of the crime to boost up her son failing career. Marty's mother is later kidnapped by Victor Blanchard, one of the killers, but she is rescued by Marty, Monk, and Natalie Teeger.

Monk takes pity on Eels for having an oppressive mother and lets him takes the credit for the case. When he receives an award for his achievement, out of shame and realizing that he could not solve further cases without real detective skills like Monk, he decides to retire to become a teacher, making his legacy as a one-time wonder detective intact.

Personality[]

Marty has an inflated ego to compensate for his insecurity and lack of critical thinking. He is slovenly, disorganized and bad at his job. However, he also has the courage Monk lacks, unhesitatingly heading into a rough sea at night while Monk stays behind.
